Poatina Village Residency
Suzanne McKane

Poatina Arts offers a year-round Artist in Residence program whereby Artists of all types may apply to come and reside in Poatina village for short, medium or long-term durations.

Over the past 15+ years, the village has enjoyed hosting a wide range of artists from as far away as Greece and Sweden to most parts of Australia. Some have joined us for as short as a just a few days or weeks and others for as long as a whole year.

The variety of disciplines engaged in by artists during their time here has included glass blowing, music composition, music recording, sculpture, writing, painting, drawing, ceramics, kiln-formed glass, wood sculpture, silver smithing, printmaking, dance composition and more...
Artists are encouraged to engage with the life of the intentional village community in a variety of ways including through regular gatherings and other activities such as fortnightly community dinners, monthly working bees and monthly gatherings of local artists.

The residency package offers artists a rent-free workspace in the village for the duration of stay.

Accommodation and other living costs are the responsibility of the artist, with a range of reasonably priced accommodation options available including brick houses, mountain cottages, studio apartments and hostel or motel rooms. A letter of acceptance can be provided to successful applicants to help artists secure grants or other funding to help them participate.
Facilities available for hire include the Poatina Glass Studio and Mountain Retreat Arts Centre, Music Recording Studio, and Ceramics Studio.

For Tasmanian artists, Arts Tasmania is offering a four-week funded residency in Poatina. See https://www.arts.tas.gov.au/grants_and_funding/tasmanian_residencies/poatina_arts
